Monochromatic Emotions

Objective: Capture 4 images, all primarily the same color, but representing different emotions.

Assignment Details:

Exploration: Color can often be used to evoke certain emotions: blue can be sadness, yellow can be excitement, and so on. But how would you evoke different emotions while just using 1 color? This week, you will be taking 4 monochromatic images (all pictures that are primarily 1 color) that each represent a different emotion.

Photography:

  • Capture 4 photos of the same color each representing one of the following emotions:
    • Joy
    • Sadness
    • Peace
    • Anger
    • Excitement
    • Calm
    • Loneliness
    • Surprise
    • Dissonance
    • Another that wasn’t mentioned
  • Use different techniques for each image to give each a different feeling (high angle vs. low angle, bright light vs. low light, etc.)

Editing and Composition:

  • Optional: Use post-processing to emphasize whatever color you have chosen in your pictures.

Submission:

  • Upload all 4 images to the media library.
  • Photos should be titled in this way: “monochrome.[your name].[emotion].2024”
  • All photos are due a week after this is assigned.

Tools Needed:

  • Camera
  • Optional: Props to represent your color
  • Optional: Editing software to enhance the monochrome aspects of your photos

Additional Notes:

Safety: Make sure you always are respectful to those you photograph and stay safe if you take photos off campus

Mindfulness: As always, be mindful of your surroundings. Do not disturb or cause damage to anything that is not yours.

Final Notes: This project is all about going against traditional color theory, so don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. By the end of the week, we should have a better sense for the emotions different techniques can evoke. And most importantly: have fun.
