My Photography Journey: From Snapshots to Stories
Starting Out: More Than Just Clicking a Button
When I first joined photography class, I thought it would just be about pointing a camera and clicking a button. I had no idea how much there was to learn—about light, angles, focus, and even the stories a single photo can tell. Now, looking back at my portfolio, I can see how much I’ve grown as a photographer, and honestly, as a person.
Mastering Composition: Less is More
One of the techniques I’m most proud of improving is my understanding of composition. At the beginning of the semester, my photos felt cluttered, like I was trying to capture everything at once. But after the Fall Photo Challenge, I started to see how simplifying the frame and focusing on one subject could make an image so much stronger. My favorite example is a photo I took of a single leaf glowing in golden light—simple, but so powerful.
Seeing the World Differently
This class has also changed how I look at the world. Before, I didn’t think twice about shadows on the sidewalk or the way sunlight streams through trees, but now I notice beauty in the little things everywhere. I think my favorite project was the Spooky Project. I took a photo of a carved pumpkin on my porch lit from the inside, and I played with shadows to give it a creepy, dramatic feel. It’s not just a photo of a pumpkin—it feels like it has a whole mood to it.
Favorite Work: Small Ideas, Big Vision
If I had to pick one photo that means the most to me, it would be from the Dollar Store Project. I created a mini photoshoot with a tiny toy astronaut. The lighting and setup weren’t perfect, but it pushed me to think creatively and work with what I had. It reminded me that photography isn’t about having the best equipment—it’s about having the best vision.
Looking Ahead: Telling More Stories
This class has taught me that every picture can tell a story, and I’m excited to keep telling mine. I may not be the next Ansel Adams yet, but I know I’ve come a long way from the kid who just liked snapping random photos on their phone. I can’t wait to see what I’ll create next.
