  • Critique: Make a blog post on redwood.photography that answers this question- Do photographers see the world differently?
  • I think every individual perceives the world differently, as we are all inherently different. Photographers see the world as differently as the next person does. I think photographers may have an eye for what makes a photograph look objectively good however. They see the symmetry and depth in things that another person would pass as just “nice looking.” For example, an old woman with lines etched on her face waiting at the bus stop may be just another old person to the average passerby, but to the photographer, it might be an opportunity to tell a story via the significance of imagery. The photographer might see the meaning of the old woman, who has let herself age naturally, either for personal reasons or circumstantial, waiting at the bus stop. The photograph might ask questions of where this woman came from, and where she was going once she reached her stop. The photograph would tell us what she was feeling–what expressions she wore.

    Garry Winogrand Critique https://redwood.photography/2023/02/25/garry-winogrand-critique/ https://redwood.photography/2023/02/25/garry-winogrand-critique/#respond Sat, 25 Feb 2023 04:54:11 +0000 https://redwood.photography/?p=3683 Donya Akhavon

    Garry Winogrand’s Quote –

“You know, I really don’t think you learn from teachers. You learn from work. I think what you learn, really, is how to be – you have to be your own toughest critic, and you only learn that from work, from seeing work.”

Winogrand’s beliefs lie in the idea that you learn by doing—above else. When you are actually taking part in the working process, the learning process, and the revising process of things, then you are stimulating your brain more than if you were to listen to a teacher. We are our greatest hindrances from learning because when we are not focused, we cannot learn. The only situation where focus stimulates growth is when we are engaged enough to complete and assess our own work.

These photos here indicate motion, but they are still too blurry. I should have used a faster shutter speed.

    Advertisement Project Reflection https://redwood.photography/2023/02/10/advertisement-project-reflection/ https://redwood.photography/2023/02/10/advertisement-project-reflection/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2023 19:33:24 +0000 https://redwood.photography/?p=3030 Donya Akhavon

This project wasn’t very difficult, but making the canva/advertisement proved to be quite the process. Creating an advertisement that both explained the product while being aesthetically pleasing was tricky, but luckily the application we used (canva), helped everything go smoothly. Our product was a pop socket so it was easy to advertise it through photos. All we had to do was put it on Brooke’s phone and take photos! We then transferred the photos to the robo gallery and then transferred the photos to canva.

    Why🦶are Important in Photography https://redwood.photography/2023/01/18/why%f0%9f%a6%b6are-important-in-photography/ https://redwood.photography/2023/01/18/why%f0%9f%a6%b6are-important-in-photography/#respond Wed, 18 Jan 2023 06:50:53 +0000 https://redwood.photography/?p=2277 Donya Akhavon

Feet enable the photographer to take photos from a multitude of angles. Photographers move around their subject in order to take photos from different perspectives—which bleed into categories of tone, meaning, implication, composition, and style to synthesize the artist’s perspective. The artist’s perspective can then be interpreted differently person to person. If feet were not a tool in the photographer’s toolbox, the results of the photo-taking session would mostly consist of very stationary and one dimensional photos—limited to the single perspective of wherever the photographer happens to be standing. With feet, the photographer can get closer, further, around, behind, to the side, under, over, and on top of the subject. This opens up a plethora of possibilities for different photos with different angles!

    Photographer: David Guttenfelder

This photo reminds me of the 80s workout outfits and Maoist China. This photo is fascinating to look at because it is both symmetrical and unnsnmetrical at this same time. The women and men are split into perfectly straight lines but are all at different stages of their flips—bringing forth themes of chaos amidst order. The bright colors amongst the grey concrete floor bring themes of either false and fabricated happiness—being forced to perform happily despite being in a desolate environment, ignoring the things that really matter. The people in this photo also remind me of toy soldiers being sprawled on the floor. The people look insignificant and small against the great sea of grey concrete. I think this photo says a lot without saying anything at all. Guttenfelder managed to encapsulate many themes within this one photograph. This photo looks painted rather than it being a photograph.

    Photographer: Gabby Micu

    Donya Akhavon

I really like this photo. The contrast of the rich green forest with the industrial metropolitan behind it is stark and eye catching. The cloudy grey skies above are very visible, with some clouds even enwrapping the highest buildings above—including Taipei 101, which stands at almost 2000 feet. The photo is so precise, with buildings even far away from the photographer being visible with commendable details. Most of all, I like how looking at this photo reminds me of what a person with 20/20 vision would see if they were looking at this view. Oftentimes, people cannot bring justice to views as magnificent as this, so with Micu being able to pull this off, I think it’s really cool. She included elements of artistry and realism in her photo which makes it all the more captivating to look at.
